  • Once thw hub of the Black Community of Pioneer, it served as the dominant church in the area for Blacks. Many families were members there at one or other inclusing, Hales. Gaddis, Saulsberry, Nibletts, Buchanan, Lindsey. Stubbs. Thompson, Scott, Redmon, Clark, Henson, Davis, Grant, Pritchett and so many others. Noteworthy pastors included Rev HL Carr and later Rev Griffen. Mt Zion not only ministered to its members but also served as a school when Magnolia School mysteriously burned down. It also operated an adjunct casket construction shop which caused us youngsters much consternation. Mt Zion also notified the community of recent deaths early in the mornings or during twilight hours by tolling the church's bell when hardly anyone had any phones. Back then the churches were packed so much so, that members began to disperse and other churches gained new congreants. Mt Calvary, Mt Lebanon, Magnolia, New Bethany were all nearby churches that gained members, some at Mt Zion's expense. Folks often spent all day around church. Sunday School in the mornings; a break; Message; Lunch at the church, children playing outside (better not get their clothes messed up); Singing & Praying; Evening Service; Benediction.
Now a days, Most people, Chuch, Fa-Gad-Abod-it. As Stevie said back in the day "Heaven Help us all."
